YEAR 2034

Vihaan and Mayuri were part of the special team assigned by the Archaeological Survey of India.  Vihaan was the senior member of the team with specialization in paleontology and geophysics.  He also specialized in courting controversy as he never followed the standard operating procedures and went by his own instincts.
They were part of the Special Investigating team deputed by the Government for restoration of the famous temple of Tanjore which was closed for the general Public on a PIL filed by various activists before the Supreme Court raising concerns over its state of deterioration.  Mayuri was the junior member of the team. She was excited to be a part of this task only due to the presence of Vihaan who was her friend.
She was cynical of the whole exercise.
“I don’t understand why we are going through this futile exercise.  At a time when India is facing threat from China and parts of our Kashmir have already been under siege by Pakistan, our Apex Courts are concerned about dead monuments.”
Vihaan put his fingers on her lips. “We are here on a Court monitored mission, so keep your mouth shut.”
Mayuri continued with exploring around the temple.  It was her first visit to the South and she had very little understanding of the history of the Southern part of India.
“Look at these Wall paintings and sculptures, they seem to tell a story.”  Mayuri kept listening to him as they proceeded together.
He continued, “This temple seems to be a work of a glorious Empire around the 10th century, which was rich in culture and architecture and vast trading links with South East Asia and as far as the Roman Empire.  Look at these sculptures and paintings, they have influences of Indonesia and Cambodia.  Every painting and sculpture has a pattern with numerical multiple of nine, which seemed to be a divine number during this Era.”
As they continued with their research, a part of their team which was working on the top of the temple witnessed a shiny diamond as they peeped through a huge boulder which sat like a crown.  They informed Vihaan who immediately reached on the top to find out more about the object of attraction.  It was apparent that no one seemed to have ever noticed it for many decades.  He carefully guided the team to take it out and kept it with him for further research.  He waved his torchlight inside the dark chamber beneath the chamber where the diamond was kept and saw images of mountains, shiv lings, Maharishi and yogis of the Himalayas.”
Mayuri was getting excited, “Wow, what an ornamental piece.  It seems there must be many treasures of the Empire buried around the temple.”
Vihaan smiled at her and said, “That’s the thing with you girls when you come across diamonds and precious metals, they cloud your powers of judgment.  There is something curious about this Diamond.”
Mayuri asked, “What is it that you find curious about?”
Vihaan said, “Look at the patterns of sculptures and paintings around the temple, they seem to tell a story and have a connection with multiples of the numerical figure ‘Nine’.  This Diamond simply does not fit into the story, the walls of the temple seem to convey.”
Mayuri was not amused, “What could be that wonderful story and why do you think that the Diamond does not fit into the story?  I think you are imagining things beyond your domain.”
Vihaan laughed and patted her cheeks, “My instincts say that the artisans who were engaged in the creating of the marvels of the temple were not aware of this diamond, it seems to be not a part of their Plans.  It has some connection with the Himalayas and Mount Kailas.  The design of the chamber beneath the boulder is completely different from what lay around the walls of the temple and seemed to have been done by a different person or persons.”
He kept the diamond in his custody.
Mayuri looked at him quizzically, “Hey what are you going to do next?  Remember this diamond belongs to the artifacts unraveled in our mission and I hope you keep it that way.”
Vihaan laughed at her and kissed her. She turned around to notice whether anyone caught them kissing and blushed.

CHAPTER I
The Mystical Diamond had a story to tell about the Empire, a story which no one would know.  When Enemies rise within, Empires fall.
The Tanjore Empire was an important center of Culture, Art and Architecture under the caring eyes of the Great Emperor Late Elangovathiarayan who was viewed as the reincarnation of Lord Shiva.   The Muthuraja clan controlled the fertile plans of the Kaveri Region and they were great devotees of Lord Shiva.  The Emperors of Muthuraja Clan were hailed as the descendants of Lord Shiva Himself by the people.  The Tanjore Palace located at the mouth of the Cauvery River was a majestic palace with vast labyrinthine buildings, enormous corridors, swanky and artistic halls, watch-towers, moat, fort and courtyards.  A rare precious Diamond gifted to the Late Emperor Elangovathiarayan during his visit to Mount Kailas occupied the center of Palace and was the symbol of the Pride of the Empire. The entrance of the palace had a large quadrangular courtyard.  There were big gateways to the northern and eastern walls.
The present Emperor Mutharaiyar wielded considerable power and respect all over South India and South-East Asia. Unlike his father Elangovathiarayan, Mutharaiyar did not like to rest on his laurels and was not much interested in Art and Architecture.  He was keen to establish Tanjore Empire as an important center of trade owing to its vicinity to rivers and seas and extended his foreign trade and maritime activity to China and South East Asia.  Yet the aura of the Great Emperor Elangovathiarayan was such that Art, Architecture and Culture continued to be the showpiece of the Tanjore Empire Mutharaiyar was an ambitious Emperor, who used his might to annex more kingdoms down South under his control.  He let the kings ruling under his states to administer their subjects as long as they were submissive to the Empire.  He married Kundavai when he was crowned as Emperor at his young age after the passing away of his father Elangovathiarayan.  Kundavai looked after all the activities around the Palace and was viewed as Goddess by her subjects.  They had a son Kulothunga, who was viewed as the beloved Prince of the Tanjore Empire by the people and was held with great respect.  Emperor Mutharaiyar's childhood friend Krishnan Raman was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief by his father the Great Emperor Elangovathiarayan under the promise that he would act as the Guardian of the Empire and Royal family.  Under the mighty military led by Krishnan Raman, Emperor Mutharaiyar strengthened and established his Empire further and almost the entire Southern part of India was under his control.
It was during this time, Emperor Mutharaiyar waged a fierce attack on the Sinhala Kingdom across the sea, which was ruled by Sinhala King Vikrama Raja Sinha as he wanted to extend his control across the seas too.  Despite valiant defence of the Sinhala King Vikrama Raja Sinha, Emperor Mutharaiyar’s mighty army led by Krishnan Raman defeated the Sinhala King after an intense battle.  The Sinhala King was forced to surrender and sign a peace treaty.  Emperor Mutharaiyar was besotted with the beauty of Valli Mayil, the daughter of Vikrama Raja Sinha and asked for his daughter’s hand for marriage.Valli Mayilwas a headstrong and tenacious woman. She agreed to marry the Emperor on the condition that he restore the full reigns of the Sinhala kingdom to her father Vikarama Raja Sinha, else she will sacrifice her life.  Mutharaiyar was so smitten by the beauty of Valli Mayil that he was willing to do anything to attain her.  Emperor Mutharaiyar handed over full control of the Sinhala kingdom back to Vikrama Raja Sinha and married ValliMayil.     He built a separate Palace for her which connected with the Palace of first Queen Kundavai. Kundavai was the most beloved Queen of the Tanjore Empire and the people of Tanjore did not like the arrival of Valli Mayil as the second Queen. Emperor Mutharaiyar had his way and Valli Mayil acquired equal prominence in all the Royal events and ceremonies. On the advice of ValliMayil, Emperor Mutharaiyar toned down his ambitions of annexing more and more kingdoms under his control.  He also started giving more autonomy to the kingdoms under his control on her advice.  To the joy of the Emperor, Valli Mayil gave birth to twins. Mutharaiyar named one of them as Hiranya after the precious diamond and the other one was called Hiranmaya.
Kundavai took all these events with grace and never questioned Emperor Mutharaiyar.  Her only worry was her son Kulothunga, whowas a man of unruly habits and vices.  He was addicted to wine and found pleasure in the company of women.  She was very much worried for him as he was destined to be the heir to the glorious Empire of Tanjore.  Emperor Mutharaiyar overlooked the habits of Kulothunga as he spent most of his time with ValliMayil.  It was during this time, the Diamond which was the symbol of the Pride of the Empire went missing. The Emperor Mutharaiyar could not get over the shock of the missing diamond and fell ill. His commander-in-chief Krishnan Raman assured him that he will find out the Diamond and ensure that those who did the act not go unpunished.  However, Mutharaiyar was deeply concerned by the missing Diamond rather than his own health which was making his recovery and treatment difficult.  The Empire was being run by Krishnan Raman on the advice of Queen Kundavai as Mutharaiyar was incapacitated.  The other Queen Valli Mayil did not take kindly to Krishnan Raman being given prominence as he did not belong to the Royal family.  She felt Hiranya should take over the Empire if Kulothunga was not ready to take over the reins of the Empire.  Krishnan Raman felt sad over the growing dissensions between the Queens but apart from being a Guardian of the Empire on behalf of Emperor Mutharaiyar, he did not like to meddle and make matters worse within the family in the interest of the Empire.  He was concerned more with the lost diamond and had to retrieve it soon, as that can only help restore the health of Emperor Mutharaiyar.
………

CHAPTER 2
If you hold onto something dearer than life, its loss will strike you hard.  Life is an illusion.
Krishnan Raman remembered the great Emperor Elangovathiarayan and repented that he broke the vow given by Emperor Elangovathiarayan that he was told to keep.
A broken vow is like a broken mirror. It can never be pieced together again. Krishnan Raman remembered the glory of those days when his father Airavata was the most trusted Advisor to the Emperor and the main Architect behind the Art and cultural splendor of the Empire. Airavata was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. Buddhist monk Bankei who travelled from Sumatra to the Tanjore Empire has chronicled the glory of the Empire under Emperor Elangovathiarayan in such a way that even the Gossip among the local people related to the Art and Sculpture or devotion to Lord and the same used to be rendered by their Court poet Bhalanetra. Krishnan Raman was not much interested in Architecture and spirituality despite persistent efforts of his father. He was more interested in martial arts, riding horses and sword fight. He was often seen playing with young Mutharaiyar. His father was disconcerted with his son’s lack of interest in their family profession.  When Emperor Elangovathiarayan came to know about this, he called Airavata.
"Krishnan Raman is such a good natured boy. You should be proud of him."
"You are magnanimous in praising my son, O Lord. I am worried about his future."
"He is destined for bigger things. He will lead the Empire in a big way"
"How can he? He does not belong to any royal blood"
"We are all Lord Shiva's children. It is due to the Lord's will that I have the opportunity to serve this lovely Empire and my people. Krishnan Raman is a courageous young man. Didn't you see how courageously he stopped a wild boar from attacking my son.  Krishnan Raman and Mutharaiyar will learn the art of warfare and governing together. "
Airavata was in tears. Where was the need to worship the Lord when he can worship Elangovathiarayan in flesh and blood.Elangovathiarayan was like a pure flame of fire. You can light a thousand lamps from that flame of fire but nothing can diminish its radiance and bliss. The bond between Airavata and Elangovathiarayan ensured the glory and culture of the Tanjore Empire. Unlike them Krishnan Raman and prince Mutharaiyar aimed to extend the Tanjore Empire and stamp its authority across the world.
At the peak of his powers, Elangovathiarayan thought of visiting Mount Kailas the abode of Lord Shiva. He embarked upon a year long journey to Mount Kailash, the abode of Lord Shiva with a hundred and eight trusted soldiers on horseback.  Nine of his trusted soldiers accompanied him on the way up to Mount Kailas while the rest were stationed at the base camp till they return.  They kept disguised themselves as servants to him who kept himself dressed like a wealthy trader and called himself Elango.  He spent few days in a Ashram serving Maharishi Sivananda Yogi.
As a part of his daily routine, he sang the song on Lord Shiva rendered by Appar Tirunavukkarasar, noted Tamil Sava Saint poet which was usually sung by his court poet Bhalanetra.
"Why bathe in the river of  Kaveri
Why seek the waters of the sounding sea
Why chant the Vedas, hear the Shastras' lore
Why roam the jungle, wander cities through
Why climb the mountains, doing penance harsh
Enlightenment is theirs, and theirs alone
Who call at every place
Upon the Lord of all
Om Namah Shivaya"
He was an Emperor, certainly not a poet or singer so skipped many lines as he sang but his heart was pure with devotion.
The Maharishi was touched by his devotion to Lord Shiva. After spending few weeks, Elango asked for his permission to make his way back home, the Yogi smiled and said.
"I am touched by your devotion towards Lord Shiva. You belong to a royal clan. Who are you?"
Elangovathiarayan realized that the Maharishi recognized him.
"Forgive me Master. I am the Emperor of Tanjore."
Maharishi spoke very little. There was an eternal smile in his face and his whole body radiated with bliss.
Elangovathiarayan hesitated a little as he paused to ask
"I came all the way from South to the Mount Kailas but couldn't see Lord Shiva. Can I ever see the Lord."
Maharishi smiled.
"Don't worry. You may not have been able to see the Lord but the Lord has seen you."
He handed over a Diamond to the Emperor.
"What is this Master"
"This will give more power to you. It was granted to me by MahavatarBabaji after my yearlong penance for Lord Shiva."
"Mahavatar Babaji?"
"He is the eternal yogi and beyond age and time.  Very few can see him or receive his blessings."
The Emperor looked quizzically at the Diamond.
The Maharishi smiled at his reaction
"This may be a small ornament for your wealthy Empire. It holds a secret"
Elangovathiarayan folded his hands in utmost devotion and asked the Maharishi about the secret.
"This Diamond gives power to the one who is in possession of it with the knowledge of the secret it holds."
"What kind of power Master?"
"One who knows its secrets and owns it can never be defeated in his mission. No one can steal it unless he knows its secrets. If not properly used, it can be self-destructive. It does not bestow immortality. The Lord knows all. Everything happens by his design and will. Mahavatar Babaji chose me. You were destined to meet me and receive this Diamond. "
Elangovathiarayan was pleased with the boon he got from the Maharishi.
The Maharishi blessed him and said, “Everyone is bound by their actions.  The secrets of this Diamond is God given and can only be shared in the interest of the people.”
As he proceeded back to the base camp to accompany the rest of the soldiers stationed there he was amused to see his network of informers awaiting his return. They were in with some bad news.
---------

CHAPTER 3
If you want to keep a secret, you must also hide it from yourself.
Emperor Elangovathiarayan got to know that the Empire was under attack from all sides during his absence and the Palace was under siege. The kingdoms of Kalyani and Vatapi from Deccan Region had joined forces for control of the Tanjore Empire.
He immediately remembered about the Diamond the Maharishi had given him. He understood that the Maharishi had given it to him for a reason. He had to utilize it for his people. Meanwhile his army was defending their fort bravely and they were being led by two young men Krishnan Raman and Prince Mutharaiyar. Elangovathiarayan proceeded straight to the neighboring kingdom of Mysore whose King Veera Bhadra was his close ally. He had to assemble a fighting army to fight back the opponents from the Mysore border and lay claim to his fort.
He summoned his hundred and eight soldiers and his network of secret informers, carefully built by him and joined forces with Veera Bhadra’s small but effective Army and waged a fierce attack which repelled the Enemy in no time and restored the balance of power in the Empire.  The people of the Empire once again hailed him as the descendant of the Lord Himself and there were celebrations all around the Empire.
The glory of Tanjore Empire was restored and the music season had commenced. Emperor Elangovathiarayan was being groomed and decked to oversee the celebrations. Elangovathiarayan noticed his barber carefully cutting off few strings of white hair.  He was worried that he was getting older and needed to groom his Prince Mutharaiyar.  Krishnan Raman and Mutharaiyar were childhood friends and they excelled in all types of combat training though Krishnan Raman was the blue eyed boy of Elangovathiarayan.
He wanted to pass on the baton to Mutharaiyar and was looking for an able bride for Mutharaiyar.  Various Kings from different states and even kingdoms outside the continent were keen to give the hand of their daughter for Mutharaiyar.  Elangovathiarayan chose Krishnan Raman to select the bride for Mutharaiyar.  After much deliberations, Kundavai was chosen to marry from the neighboring state of Vengi. Elangovathiarayan also sought proposals for Krishnan Raman but Krishnan Raman chose not to marry and serve the Empire for his life time. He was not a man of great learning but was viewed as a young monk with great respect. Elangovathiarayan was touched by the dedication of Krishnan Raman.
"Look my dear boy, you have to marry for the sake of your father Airavata."
Elangovathiarayan exhorted Krishnan Raman as he talked to him privately
Krishnan Raman stuck to his stand of dedicating himself for the service of the Empire.
"If not now at least later I hope you change your stand. OK I have also called you for another reason."
"What is that about" asked Krishnan Raman
Elangovathiarayan talked to him that he intended to crown Mutharaiyar as the next Emperor and looking for dates.
"Wow that's great to hear."
Krishnan Raman was ecstatic
"And you will be the next Commander - in- Chief."
"Why me? There are so many able ones my Lord."
Krishnan Raman was hesitant.
"I chose you as you value my son's life more than yourself and also want to pass on a secret."
"What is that my Lord?"
Emperor Elangovathiarayan told him about his journey to Mount Kailas and the secrets of the Mystical Diamond."
Krishnan Raman became emotional as Elangovathiarayan kept telling him. He was touched that the Emperor kept so much faith in him.
He vowed that he won't reveal the secrets of the Mystical Diamond and pledged himself for the service of the Empire.
Elangovathiarayan had a lasting advice.
"The secrets of the Diamond must not be revealed unless it is in the interest of the Empire.
A vow broken is like a broken mirror. It cannot be pieced together again. "
Krishnan Raman promised that he will keep the promise.
Meanwhile the entire Empire was jubilant with news of the Marriage of Prince Mutharaiyar.  As the marriage celebrations were underway, Elangovathiarayan fell sick.  He was under the care of his most treated Physicians but Elangovathiarayan felt that his time is over.  He was content that the Empire was in safe hands. His son Mutharaiyar was very able and had a very good friend in Krishnan Raman.
Airavata was in tears. He stood close to Elangovathiarayan till he breathed his last. Krishnan Raman was touched by his father's bond with the Emperor. They were very much like brothers. He was happy to have a friend like Mutharaiyar who was very much like his younger brother. And now his younger brother was to be crowned as the Emperor of Tanjore. He felt sad that Elangovathiarayan could not be able to witness the crowning of his son. The coronation of Emperor Mutharaiyar took place with pomp and glory. He married Kundavai under the protective gaze of his friend Krishnan Raman amidst boisterous celebrations all around the Empire about the arrival of the new Emperor and Queen.
A year passed away for the newly wedded couple in bliss. Queen Kundavai was pregnant.  Anticipating a son, Emperor Mutharaiyar was ecstatic.
“I want to gift my son the kingdom of Kalyani and Vatapi.”
Krishnan Raman understood.  Mutharaiyar wanted to avenge the attacks made by Kalyani and Vatapi during his father’s journey to Mount Kailas.  He concurred with Mutharaiyar.
Queen Kundavai was not so pleased.
“My Dear, we have to keep the legacy of your father the great Emperor Elangovathiarayan.  We should use our Army only to defend our territory.”
Mutharaiyar was not convinced. “We must strike first at the heart of our enemies in such a way that they can never hit us back.  What is the use spending on needless Art and Architecture.  We must strengthen and expand our Empire instead of letting our enemies bleed our Army.”
Krishnan Raman agreed in unison.  It was the beginning of the ruthless Era of Empire Mutharaiyar. Queen Kundavai let them have their way only on promise that they won’t take anything away from the beauty of Art and Architectural marvel of the Empire, so carefully built and nurtured by Emperor Elangovathiarayan in their quest for trade and conquest. The Emperor and his friend had other ideas.

CHAPTER 4
Better slip with foot than tongue.
"I am just waiting for your orders. I will swoop down the Western Deccan and bring the good news to you."
Krishnan Raman thumped his chest as he said this.
"May you be victorious for ever."
Emperor Mutharaiyar gave his orders.
In no time Krishnan Raman swooped down the Western Deccan with his Army. With the Mystical Diamond by his side, he was unconquerable. The Elephants went berserk, their. They had the most powerful naval forces by the river and the sea. Their cavalry cut through the supply lines and rained arrows. They were the first to use cannons and fire power which they procured from kingdoms across the sea. The rampaging Elephants, the booming cannons and the incessant attacks from horsemen was such that vast areas of the Western Deccan was reduced to rubble and dust. His aim was to take revenge for the attack by the Kalyani and Vatapi kingdoms during the reign of great Emperor Elangovathiarayan. But the intensity of the attack was such that even the neighboring small kingdoms fell under his control.
The victorious Army reached back with the Kings and Queens in captivity.  Emperor Mutharaiyar welcomed Krishnan Raman with open arms.
'I have a happy news to share with you. Kundavai has given birth to a son. "
Krishnan Raman was delighted and rushed to see the bubbly young child.
Queen Kundavai did not approve of their conquest though.  She called Krishnan Raman as her brother.
"My dear brother, this will be our last conquest. We need not build our Empire on the blood of others. Release the Kings and Queens."
Krishnan Raman looked at Mutharaiyar.  Mutharaiyar had a hearty laugh.
"As you wish, O Mighty Queen." He uttered as he embraced his wife.
Krishnan Raman was about to exit as he did not want to disturb their private moment.
"Wait for a moment."
Mutharaiyar stopped him.
"How can I let you go after this tremendous victory you have given. The Queen has expressed her wish. I want you to have your say."
Krishnan Raman paused and replied.
"Let the Kings rule on our terms. But our conquests should continue. The kings shall rule under our authority."
"That's spoken like a true warrior. I am proud of you my friend." said Mutharaiyar.
On the insistence of Krishnan Raman an order was issued to all the kingdoms in the South to pledge their loyalty for the Tanjore Empire and pay their taxes if they want to avoid bloodshed.
Kundavai disapproved of it.
"You two are not going to listen anyway. At least let Krishnan Raman name our child as an uncle."
Krishnan Raman felt happy with her gesture.
"I am indebted to your family who have given my father and myself so much respect."
Mutharaiyar hugged him as he got emotional.
A grand naming ceremony was arranged. Krishnan Raman named their son, "Kulothunga".
There was a grand feast which was followed by festivities around the Empire. Meanwhile other Southern kingdoms did not dare to challenge the might of the Tanjore Empire and offered to rule under their Empire. The Empire grew as a major trading center across the seas. It's citizens got wealthier and found pleasure in the things imported from the South East of Asia. The aura of Mutharaiyar kept growing. Various kings from South East of Asia came to Tanjore as guests and paid him and Queen Kundavai due respects. As the young son Kulothunga was to become 5 years in age, Krishnan Raman dreamt of even bigger things.
He confided his plans to Mutharaiyar  "We have strong trading ties across the sea. But our ships have to take a longer route due to the Sinhala kingdom across the sea. If we attack them and gain control over them, we can widen our trading base."
Mutharaiyar was apprehensive.
"The Sinhala kingdom won't budge. It is not easy to mount an attack across the sea. There will be lot of casualties on our side. We may not gain anything from such adventure."
Krishnan Raman understood the apprehensions of Mutharaiyar and kept convincing him
After a series of arguments Mutharaiyar finally agreed.
"OK We will start our preparations. This time I myself will lead the war.”
Krishnan Raman was hesitant.
"No my dear friend! I am enough to lead our army and hand over the Sinhala kingdom to you.  Who can dare to stop me as long as the diamond is with me?"
The words slipped out from his tongue.
Mutharaiyar noticed his hesitation.
"What was that you were telling about some Diamond."
"No nothing. I simply uttered in jest."  Mutharaiyar was not convinced.
"You are hiding something from me. As a friend I never hid anything from you."
Krishnan Raman was at loss for words.  Mutharaiyar laughed at him.
"You are not even a good actor. I wonder how you were born in the family of Artists."
Krishnan Raman did not mind Mutharaiyar taking a dig at him.
The more he tried to hide the more he will give away what he did not intend to say.
"It's not about hiding anything from you. It's all about keeping a promise.” he said.
Mutharaiyar egged him on.
"Come on! You were talking about a diamond. Are you gifting it to someone special. It's time you get married."
Krishnan Raman did not like to talk much and wanted to exit.
Mutharaiyar was just not allowing him to leave.
"Look my friend. I will tell Kundavai if you don't feel comfortable if it's about a girl you wish to marry."
Mutharaiyar was in his elements.
"No! It's not about getting married. It's about respecting the sentiments of your father. He has taken a vow from me." Krishnan Raman replied.
Mutharaiyar was further intrigued.
"When did my father give something to you."
"It's not something. It's a special diamond. A Maharishi had gifted it to your father during his visit to Mount Kailas."
Mutharaiyar could not contain his laughter. "When did you start believing in amulets and God like my father? There is no harm in telling. After all, I am the son of Emperor Elangovathiarayan."
He stroked his moustache proudly.
"You are right. He said that this Diamond would bring luck to the Empire. I believed in him as it was his last wish not to reveal it."
Mutharaiyar permitted him to go. He knew his friend well and decided to know more about the secret in other way.

CHAPTER 5
Losing a war is a better bet than losing face

Krishnan Raman was engaged in the early morning drill of his soldiers. He did not want to rake up the issue of invading Sinhala kingdom anymore. His army was taken aback by the sudden presence of the Royal Cavalcade of Emperor Mutharaiyar and Queen Kundavai.
Kundavai got down first and proceeded straight to the soldiers to enquire about their well-being and families.
Mutharaiyar proceeded towards Krishnan Raman.
Both of them hugged warmly.
"It's a great pleasure to see you here along with the Queen. The soldiers will be feeling happy and motivated." exclaimed Krishnan Raman
Mutharaiyar smiled.
"It's been a long while since I've taken to the field. I thought about your idea of invading the Sinhala kingdom yesterday night. We should go ahead. I will lead the war."
He said as he took Krishnan Raman to discuss more about it in the War Room.
Krishnan Raman pleaded with the Emperor not to assert himself as the conquest across the sea is bound to be tricky.
After a series of arguments, Mutharaiyar got up and said," Do you think I have become weak. Remember our childhood days when we used to compete with each other during our training. Wrestling was our preferred sport. There was no convincing winner till the end."
Krishnan Raman smiled as he too relived the younger days he spent with Mutharaiyar.
Mutharaiyar continued," It’s not yet over. I challenge you for a wrestling match. "
Krishnan Raman was hesitant.
“Those were our playful days. Now you are my Emperor. You can lead the war as you wish. I do not have the credentials to even talk with you. I abide by any of your orders. "
Krishnan Raman bent down.
“Tell me about the secrets of the Diamond then my dear friend.", ordered Mutharaiyar.
Krishnan Raman told him about the experiences of Emperor Elangovathiarayan during his visit to Mount Kailas
Mutharaiyar and the divine gift he got from a Maharishi and the secrets behind its powers.
He also cautioned that it shall not be revealed to anyone unless it is in the interest of the people.
Krishnan Raman handed over the diamond to the Emperor.
Queen Kundavai sneaked in.
"What's going on between you two? I may also join."
Emperor Mutharaiyar smiled and embraced her warmly.
"Look, your brother and the Commander in Chief of the Tanjore Empire has brought for you this special gift as he showed the Diamond."
Queen Kundavai was happy to see the gift.
"Let it be placed at the center of our Palace and add to the glitter."
"So be it my Queen" exclaimed Mutharaiyar.
Mutharaiyar went ahead with the preparations for the invasion of the Sinhala kingdom. The lone voice of dissent was only from the Queen.
Mutharaiyar summoned all the kings from the South. They pledged to give their soldiers for this battle. The Emperor planned to use these soldiers in the frontline to ensure minimum casualties to his men.
He sent his informers across the sea to the kingdoms in the South East of Asia and sought their backing. The preparation went for over six months. The kingdoms from South East of Asia also sent their ships and naval Expertise. Krishnan Raman watched with awe at the expertise and skill of the Emperor. He could not have certainly made such preparations and felt that Mutharaiyar was right in leading the Army. He also felt that he needlessly ended over an argument over the Mystical Diamond. It was after all given to him by Emperor Elangovathiarayan to whom his family will ever remain indebted for life. Mutharaiyar was after all the Emperor and revealing about the Mystical Diamond to him was in public interest only. Krishnan Raman felt that he was being needlessly egoistic. He wholeheartedly participated in the War process. They waited for an opportune time to attack the Sinhala kingdom.
In the meanwhile the Sinhala King Vikrama Raja Sinha was watching these developments. His informers were apprising him about the provocation by the Tanjore Empire. He sent feelers from his kingdom for peace pact. The soldiers deployed by Emperor Mutharaiyar needlessly fired at them. This incident was enough to trigger a war. Emperor Mutharaiyar's naval fleet rolled into the sea and their mighty Army surrounded the Sinhala kingdom in no time. Mutharaiyar himself led the attack and went right upto the Palace where the King Vikrama Raja Sinha was directing his forces to defend his territory. A fierce battle ensued between Vikrama Raja Sinha and Mutharaiyar. Just as Mutharaiyar was gaining the upper hand and marched towards the King, the princess came in between sword in hand and fought back ferociously. She was ValliMayil the only daughter of Vikrama Raja Sinha. Emperor Mutharaiyar was struck by her bewitching eyes. She was so beautiful. He could not counter her attacks. His eyes were filled with love and lust. Krishnan Raman jumped in and thwarted the attacks and got her and the King imprisoned.
Emperor Mutharaiyar could not get over those beautiful eyes of ValliMayil. He desired to marry her. Her beauty combined with an aggressive instinct bowled him over.
Despite Krishnan Raman disagreeing with him he went ahead with a marriage proposal to King Vikrama Raja Sinha who was kept in captivity along with his daughter.
Valli Mayil intervened and agreed to marry Mutharaiyar only on two conditions else she was ready to give her life fighting him.
"1. Emperor Mutharaiyar would hand over the reins back to her father and compensate for the damages.
2. He shall not attack any kingdom as long as she will be the Queen. He will use his Army only for defence."
Mutharaiyar was so madly in love with her. He agreed to all her conditions. King Vikrama Raja Sinha arranged for a quick wedding of his daughter with all the grandeur of the Sinhala kingdom.
The sudden turn of events was a huge setback for Krishnan Raman.
On one hand he had to guard against any deceit by the Sinhala kingdom
On the other hand he was worried about going back to the Empire.
How was he going to face Queen Kundavai who looked at him like her brother?

CHAPTER 6
When secrets are revealed, many things go lost, never to be found again.
Krishnan Raman looked dejected and forlorn  On one hand, he was wary of going back to the Empire and face Queen Kundavai   On the other hand, he had the task of guarding the Emperor and their mission against any kind of deceit by the men of the Sinhala kingdom.  He did not trust them.
Meanwhile Emperor Mutharaiyar was getting ready for the first wedding night with Valli Mayil.Valli Mayil was bedecked in all her finery. A smile blossomed across her face as she entered the room and saw him.  He blew off the candles and held her towards him and gripped her waist.
“Why did you make it so dark”.  Her voice was huskier than it should have been and Mutharaiyar could feel his chest heaving against her bosom.  The light from the moon peeped from the window like a voyeur.  She tried to wriggle out from his grip.  He held her tightly and wanted to feel her all over.  A warrior that she was, she dodged and pushed him to the bed  He pulled her towards him and kissed her lips. She turned around and bit him playfully.  In a few minutes, there was nothing between them.  The moon blushed and hid behind the clouds.
The clouds that enveloped the mind of Krishnan Raman kept growing darker.  He could not sleep.  The next day, a cheerful Mutharaiyar greeted Krishnan Raman and hugged him.
“You look so tired my friend.  I think you got to marry.  There are many beautiful girls in this kingdom”
Krishnan Raman forced a smile and hugged him back again to hide his emotions.
Mutharaiyar was beaming.
“I had the most wonderful night.  The marriage with ValliMayil was the most beautiful thing to have happened to the Empire.  Vikrama Raja Sinha is bound to abide by the interests of the Tanjore Empire as his daughter is married to me.  Thanks to you, our conquest to the Sinhala kingdom could never have happened without your insistence.  Make the preparations for going back to the Tanjore Empire.”
Valli Mayil joined him.  He kissed her and could not keep her eyes off her.  Krishnan Raman noticed that Mutharaiyar was drooling over ValliMayil and made a quick exit
Queen Kundavai in the meanwhile had got wind of the developments in the Sinhala kingdom and showed no emotions.  There were angry whispers amongst the people in the Empire against the new Queen ValliMayil.  Kundavai stood at the entrance of the fort to welcome the victorious Emperor Mutharaiyar and ValliMayil.  She hugged ValliMayil but avoided Krishnan Raman who was accompanying them.
Next day Krishnan Raman went to the palace of Kundavai to explain what happened but she dismissed him off saying that she did not want to listen or talk to him anymore.  Kundavai was angry with Krishnan Raman as it was his plan to invade the Sinhala Kingdom that led to all this.
A year passed by.  Valli Mayil gave birth to twins to the joy of Mutharaiyar.  He named them as Hiranya and Hiranmaya.  Kundavai took everything with grace.  She was only worried of her son Kulothunga who was getting wayward.  Hiranya was valorous and equipped with all sorts of training on warfare very much like his father Mutharaiyar.  He was also a good wrestler.  Hiranmaya imbibed all the qualities of his grandfather the Great Emperor Elangovathiarayan.  He listened to the stories of Lord Shiva and the spiritual journeys of Emperor Elangovathiarayan from the veteran Court Poet Bhalanetra.
The glory of the Tanjore Empire continued to grow with leaps and bounds over the years.   There were no more conquests by the Tanjore Empire on the insistence of Valli Mayil  who was more assertive.  She was the popular Queen outside the Empire due to her influence over Mutharaiyar in granting more Autonomy to the Kings and easing the conditions of trading pacts with kingdoms across the sea.  The Sinhala Kingdom was the main trading partner of the Tanjore Empire and benefited immensely from its growth.  Queen Kundavai on the other hand was the most beloved Queen amongst the people of the Tanjore Empire.  She spent her time touring around the Empire and addressing the basic problems of the people. Krishnan Raman preferred to remain in the background.  The Mystical Diamond enabled the Empire to succeed in all its missions but who could stop the cracks that was surfacing within the Royal family and was widening slowly.
Suddenly one day Krishnan Raman was summoned to appear before Emperor Mutharaiyar in front of Queen Kundavai and Valli Mayil.  Krishnan Raman felt happy that Mutharaiyar happened to call him after a long time.  As he appeared before Mutharaiyar and went ahead to hug him, Mutharaiyar stopped him and asked, “The Diamond has gone missing since yesterday night.  Do you know anything about it.”
The news of the missing Diamond came as a shock for Krishnan Raman as it meant trouble for the Empire.  He looked at Kundavai.  She continued to avoid his gaze.  Valli Mayil interrupted and said to Mutharaiyar.
“It is not befitting of you as an Emperor to talk to such persons on even terms.”
Krishnan Raman exited quickly. Mutharaiyar did not even bother to stop him.  Krishnan Raman knew that his friend is angry over the missing Diamond and he has got to somehow help him.
Mutharaiyar fell severely ill.  Physicians all over the world were roped in to attend to his illness.  The Court physician had already told Kundavai that the condition of Mutharaiyar is getting worse.  She issued orders to Krishnan Raman to take charge of the Emperor till the recovery of Emperor Mutharaiyar.  Krishnan Raman knew that unless he comes with some good news about recovery of the Missing Diamond, his friend’s condition is bound to get worse.  He had to deal with the trouble that may occur due to the missing Diamond and also tactfully face the wrath of Queen Valli Mayil who did not take kindly to him being given charge of the Empire.
He closed his eyes and relived the moments right from the time Emperor Elangovathiarayan handed over him the Mystical Diamond and revealed its secrets upto the conquest of the Sinhala Kingdom initiated by him.   He was feeling bitter about himself when one of his trusted aides shook him and brought him back to reality with a sad news.
“Emperor Mutharaiyar is no more”
---------

CHAPTER 7
When you lose sense, you kill yourself by baying for others’ blood.

A pall of gloom descended on the Empire of Tanjore. Krishnan Raman remained a sad witness to the last rites performed on Mutharaiyar. He was there during the last rites of Elangovathiarayan too. The Court poet Bhalanetra sang and wept.
"Why did not you take my life O Lord Shiva and give them my years of life." Bhalanetra was hundred years old. The kings and Emperors of the neighboring kingdoms and from as far as South East of Asia paid their last respects to the soul of Emperor Mutharaiyar. Krishnan Raman knew very well that many within them must be feeling happy with the developments and happened to be there to see if they can sniff any weaknesses and seize opportunities.
He was equally wary of the bickering within the Royal family.
The death of Mutharaiyar created a huge void. He was also worried about the missing of the Mystical Diamond and hoped no one knows its secrets.
“We have to find out the Diamond soon. It was the last wish of the Emperor. ” uttered Krishnan Raman
“Is this the time to be talking of the Diamond, you fool? Don’t you know, the Emperor is dead.” shouted Hiranya. Krishnan Raman felt very sad. Atleast Hiranya could have addressed the Emperor respectfully. He was after all his son. Hiranya was not happy with the way the events had shaped out as he did not want to be taking the orders of Kulothunga who was more of a gambler and power hungry kind but was touted to be the successor to the throne. His bitterness towards his father grew due to the wayward ways of Kulothunga.
Krishnan Raman knew about this but he was deeply worried about the imminent danger to the fifty year old glorious reign of Emperor Mutharaiyar. It was only he and the Emperor who knew that the Diamond held the secret to the invincibility of the Empire.
Valli Mayil hated Emperor Mutharaiyar’s first wife Kundavai as she could not reign in Kulothunga and ignored him. She did not like the importance that the Emperor gave to Krishnan Raman. She nursed the ambition of hoisting Hiranya to the throne as the heir to Emperor Mutharaiyar as she did not want her sons to suffer if anything adverse happened to their father. Krishnan Raman was aware of the bickerings within the Royal family. He was certain that the Diamond could have been stolen by an insider who was closely related. Who could it be?
Kundavai was avoiding him and not on speaking terms with him though she had issued orders through her aides that Krishnan Raman take over the charge of the Empire.
Krishnan Raman started thinking who could be behind the missing of the Diamond.
Kulothunga was the successor to the throne. He could not have stolen it. Even if Kulothunga had come to know of the secret from his father he could have asserted himself with the diamond.
Hiranmaya the second son of Valli Mayil, much to her displeasure was more into spirituality and Grandfather Elangovathiarayan was his inspiration. He had already set off for Mount Kailas the abode of Lord Shiva after listening to the stories of his grandfather by the court poets. Hiranya was the most valorous among the sons of Mutharaiyar and Emperor Mutharaiyar loved him more than his first son Kulothunga. But Hiranya was not happy with the Godly status of his step mother Kundavai and wanted his mother Valli Mayil to occupy center stage in the Empire. He was averse to the vices of his step brother and rightful heir Kulothunga had and hated his father for not keeping Kulothunga under tight leash. Is there any chance that Hiranya had done it. He hoped it was not.
Krishnan Raman was aware that owner of the diamond held the control of the Empire. He spread the news around the Empire that the diamond was a part of the family tradition and needs to be restored as it was the last wish of Emperor Mutharaiyar.
His efforts were of no consequence as no one paid heed to him. Queen Valli Mayil was running the kingdom on her own terms. There were two power centers emerging. The palace had already got divided into two camps, one of Kundavai and the other of Valli Mayil. Valli Mayil also sent feelers to the Sinhala kingdom to stage a coup and hoist Hiranya to the throne. Krishnan Raman tried his best to bring a truce between the two Queens but his efforts were thwarted by Hiranya. There seemed to be an imminent war building up between Kundavai led by Krishnan Raman and Valli Mayil led by Hiranya. Kundavai kept silent and kept him out of reach.
Krishnan Raman had no choice but to act. He was probably grasping at straws in search for some way out.
Fiercely loyal to the Emperor Mutharaiyar, Krishnan Raman summoned his troops and waged a battle with Hiranya. Krishnan Raman's trusted soldiers and Hiranya's army drew their weapons and took up battle positions as their soldiers charged in for a bitter and bloody battle. Hiranyas army was bigger and stronger as they were backed by the Sinhala Army. The battle raged on for a week. Each time Krishnan Raman appeared to be winning the battle but Hiranya emerged with much bigger army. The rest of the kingdoms in the South and even some from the North sensed an opportunity to share the loot of the Tanjore Empire. The powerful naval forces of the Tanjore Empire did not participate in the war and remained neutral. There was confusion within the ranks regarding whose orders to follow?
The vultures hovering around the skies to devour on the dead could not even fly. Their stomachs were so full. The citizens who lived so happily under Emperor Mutharaiyar got entangled in this bloody battle among the sons. Women and children no longer felt secured.omen and children no longer felt secured. The seemingly endless war was interrupted abruptly with the news of the death of Valli Mayil which sent shockwaves across the Empire.

CHAPTER 8
Nothing seems painful than the feeling of being unwanted.

Hiranya got enraged by the death of ValliMayil. He accused Krishnan Raman of killing his mother. The Sinhala kingdom held a meeting with the other kings for ousting Kundavai and killing Krishna Raman to avenge the death of ValliMayil.  The loyalties of the people of Tanjore Empire though was with Kundavai and Krishnan Raman. Kulothunga was getting wary of the prevailing situation. He was not happy with Kundavai prevailing on Krishnan Raman. He hated Krishnan Raman ever since his father married second Queen ValliMayil. He sent message to Hiranmaya. Hiranmaya had just returned from his journey from Mount Kailas on hearing the twin news of sorrow - the death of his father and his mother. Hiranmaya had great respect for Kundavai and felt that this internal war was the reason for ValliMayils killing. He had to stop this war and agreed for a deal with Kulothunga. Only hitch was convincing Hiranya.
He confronted Hiranya
"Stop this war at once brother. We do not want to lose more lives."
"You have no right to talk Hiranya. Go back to your mountains and spend dancing with your Lord's"
Hiranya shouted back.
Hiranmaya patiently tried to instil sense in Hiranya.
But all that Hiranya wanted was revenge.
Hiranmaya advised Hiranya that the sympathies of the Tanjore Empire still lay with Kundavai and any misadventure on his part will prove costly.
Krishnan Raman on the other hand was in a quandary. He did not worry for himself but that of Kundavai and her son.
He rushed to Kundavai to apprise her of the grave situation.
Kundavai stopped him before he proceeded to say anything.
"You need not say anything brother."
Her words comforted Krishnan Raman
Kundavai had spoken to Krishnan Raman after 18 long years.
She had stopped speaking to him after the conquest of the Sinhala kingdom.
His whole being was filled with positive energy as he had always yearned her to speak.
He would not have minded if she had shouted at him or punished him. But her silence was killing him till now.
"You please quit as the Commander in chief and exit the Empire." she said.
Krishnan Raman was shocked.
"I will quit from all positions but cannot leave you in danger. I will lay down my life but won't allow anyone to harm this Empire."
Kundavai did not seem to listen to him.
She said, "Your presence is not going to help this Empire anymore. You go to the kingdom of Mysore. I have arranged for your safe passage."
Krishnan Raman was in tears. He was being banished from the Empire.
He said, "I accept your orders my sister. But I am worried about this Empire.  It's under attack from all sides."
Kundavai said, "I have taken care of everything. You need not worry."
Krishnan Raman refused to move. He wanted assurance that Kundavai was safe.
She said, "Mutharaiyar is no more and it's time our sons decide the future of the Empire. Kulothunga has already talked to Hiranmaya and they have worked out a deal with consent of Hiranya."
Krishnan Raman asked, "What's the deal?"
She said, "No one likes your presence. Kulothunga views you as the reason behind his father marrying ValliMayil. ValliMayil never approved of the status accorded to you. Now that she is no more Hiranya is angry at you as he thinks you are the reason for her death. Hiranmaya suggested that Kulothunga be crowned Emperor and Hiranya will control the whole Empire in return for a deal."
Krishnan Raman asked, ”What was that?"
"Hiranya wants you to be killed."
Krishnan Raman knew that it was a clever ploy by Hiranya to occupy the throne through deceit. He tried convincing Kundavai that he did not fear death.
Kundavai replied, "Please understand. At this moment peace has to return to the Empire. I have agreed on the truce pact of my sons on condition that you will be sent out of the kingdom and will not be harmed. Your presence will make it difficult for peace to return to the Empire. You go to Mysore."
King VeeraSomeshwara was the son of King VeeraBhadra who was a trusted ally of the Tanjore Empire. VeeraSomeshwara, Krishnan Raman and Mutharaiyar were close friends during their childhood days and had together taken training in warfare.
Krishnan Raman agreed with a heavy heart. He understood the dilemma of Kundavai who was trying to save the Empire from disintegrating. Krishnan Raman was struck with disappointment of being treated like a traitor.  He had so loyally served the Emperor and his kingdom for so many years. Krishnan Raman advised Kundavai to take care of her son Kulothunga and left for Mysore.
VeeraSomeshwara welcomed Krishnan Raman with open arms.
"The kingdom of Mysore welcomes you."
Krishnan Raman accepted his greetings but began to live life as a recluse.
Meanwhile an uneasy calm prevailed at the Empire of Tanjore. The coronation of Kulothunga was being undertaken under the watchful eyes of Hiranya and the Sinhala army. Kundavai was effectively a prisoner at their hands though she was overseeing the coronation process of her son. Hiranmaya who had brought in this uneasy truce remained the only sane voice who tried to usher in normalcy. He was of the view that the Sinhala army should return back to the Sinhala kingdom which was hotly contested by Hiranya.
A year passed by since Kulothunga took over as the Emperor. Krishnan Raman spent all his time in deep thoughts. Inactivity and introspection left him lethargic and uninterested in anything.
One day King Veera Someshwara came towards him, "I have some news for you."
Krishnan Raman looked uninterested.
"It's about the Tanjore Empire."
Krishnan Raman's eyes gleamed at the mention of Tanjore Empire.
“What news!”
“I have three types of news” replied VeeraSomeshwara.
“One is sad news, one is good news and one is shocking news.”
CHAPTER 9
Truth is mysterious, elusive; when revealed it gets painful.

Krishnan Raman asked King Veera Someshwara what news he brought for him.
Veera Someshwara replied, “The sad news is that court poet Bhalanetra is no more.  The good news is that Kulothunga has taken full control of the Tanjore Empire and has defeated all his enemies.  Kundavai is looking for a suitable bride for him and has invited you.”
Krishnan Raman was delighted with this news.
“Make preparations for me immediately.  I have got to go.”
Veera Someshwara asked him to be patient and not to hurry.
“You did not even care to hear of the shocking news left.  Hiranya and Hiranmaya have been arrested and kept under imprisonment.”
Krishnan Raman was equally shocked by this unexpected news.
He said, “I understand you are concerned about me and do not want me to go to the Tanjore Empire.  But I have never refused the orders of the Tanjore Empire and especially Queen Kundavai.”
“Ok I know I cannot stop you my dear friend.  But you being a part of this kingdom, it is our duty to ensure that you are safe till you reach the Tanjore Empire.  I will be sending two of my trusted soldiers along with you.”  said Veera Someshwara.
Veera Someshwara was worried for the safety of Krishnan Raman.
Few days passed.  Veera Someshwara got the news that Krishnan Raman was killed on the way alongwith two of his soldiers.
This news came as a blow and angered him.  This was no less than an act of War.  Veera Someshwara summoned his Army and prepared for an attack on the Tanjore Empire.
He knew that his army was no match against the might of the Army of the Tanjore Empire.  However, no kingdom dared to rub the Mysore kingdom the wrong way as its Army comprised of several units which specialized in Guerilla warfare and can cause considerable damage to any Army.  The other obvious reason was its decades- long friendship with the Tanjore Empire.
The Tanjore Empire has dared the Mysore kingdom and posed a challenge.  King Veera Someshwara led his army and crossed the borders of the Mysore kingdom.  Its guerilla outfits were kept ready in case of any threat to the King.  As his army moved towards the Tanjore Palace, he could witness scenes of destruction and damage around the outskirts of the War ravaged Empire.  Surprisingly his army was met with meek resistance with only a few skirmishes here and there.   As he approached the Palace Gates, the Chief of the Armed Unit of the Palace recognized him as King Veera Someshwara, the friend of King Mutharaiyar and Krishna Raman and bowed before him with respect.
Veera Someshwara was however not amused by the way Krishnan Raman was being killed and was angry at the audacity of the Empire to commit such an Act.
“I want to meet Queen Kundavai.” He said sternly.
He was guided to the Palace where he was stunned to see a weeping Kundavai in front of the body of Emperor Kulothunga.
He walked towards Kundavai and sat beside her.  Wiping her tears, she confided.
“I had only asked Krishnan Raman to exit the Empire on request from Hiranmaya who came up with a truce pact.  My husband is no more, Valli Mayil was killed in mysterious circumstances.  I did not want any more calamities to happen in the Empire.  Kulothunga was being coronated under the watchful eyes of Hiranya.  The Empire was under siege from the Sinhala Kingdom.  Kulothunga was a misfit as an Emperor and I was being selfish in being protective of him though he lacked the credentials.  But I never thought that he was a manipulator and deceitful person.
Krishnan Raman had handed over a Mystical Diamond to my husband and revealed its secrets.  It added to the might of Mutharaiyar and he was successful in all missions ever since he had the Diamond.  I was not on speaking terms with Krishnan Raman after their conquest of the Sinhala Kingdom which led to Mutharaiyar to be stuck by the seduction of wily Valli Mayil.  He happened to spend more time with her and occasionally had time for me.   Mutharaiyar happened to reveal the secrets of the Diamond to Valli Mayil when he was at the peak of his powers.  My son Kulothunga was a voyeur and had a habit of sneaking into unsuspecting places.  Unfortunately that night, he happened to be in their room to watch their act and listened to Mutharaiyar reveal about the Diamond to Valli Mayil before his another bout of romance with her.  He got furious and stole the Diamond.  With the Diamond, he orchestrated all the moves right from setting up Hiranmaya to enter a pact with Hiranya, ousted Krishnan Raman for the Empire, killed Valli Mayil and gained the confidence of the people of the Empire.  Once he gained power, he showed his true nature, crushed the Sinhala kingdom which was controlling the Empire and put Hiranya and Hiranmaya into imprisonment.  Unaware of his moves, I was really awestruck seeing my wayward son becoming a tyrannical ruler.  But the motherly love in me and my hatred towards the family of Valli Mayil, I secretly admired my son taking over the Empire.  But I was not aware of his machinations till one day, when I raised the topic of his marriage, he requested me to invite Krishnan Raman.  That day I felt so happy and immediately sent orders for inviting Krishnan Raman.  The news of the arrest of Hiranya and Hiranmaya had also spread around the Empire by then.  Kulothunga proved me wrong.  The killing of Krishnan Raman came as a shock to me.  I called Kulothunga and asked him to act upon the traitors who did this act.  Kulothunga laughed aloud and spoke about the Diamond and his scheming ways in gaining the control of the Empire.  I was furious with Kulothunga as had taken three lives.  He killed Valli Mayil, he killed my brother Krishnan Raman but most importantly he stole the Diamond.  It was the missing Diamond that led to his father Mutharaiyar getting unwell and his untimely death.”

CHAPTER 10
Truth is mysterious, elusive; when revealed it gets painful.

Kundavai revealed about the secrets of the Mystical Diamond and handed it over to Veera Someshwara.
Veera Someshwara had an enormous task in front of him. He had to quell the challenge posed by the enemy kingdoms as well as end the internal discontent which was rising within the Empire.
He ordered the release of Hiranya and Hiranmaya and requested Kundavai to guide and chart the further course of action to be taken in the interest of the Empire.
Kundavai called Hiranya and Hiranmaya. She expressed her wish that Hiranmaya be made the next Emperor and Hiranya shall be his Commander in chief.
Hiranya endorsed the wish of Kundavai. Kundavai expressed her apologies to Hiranmaya and Hiranya.
"I'm guilty for the acts of my son which caused you both deep sorrow. You can give any punishment to me."
King Veera Someshwara intervened, "I hope we may not go back to whatever happened. The bitterness within the Empire should go away. That will be our ultimate tribute to Mutharaiyar. I am happy to see Hiranmaya taking over the reins of the Empire. He has all the qualities of his grandfather Elangovathiarayan. "
Hiranmaya fell at the feet of Kundavai and Veera Someshwara and took their blessings.
He ordered implementation of five major tasks before his coronation of the Emperor.
'The Sinhala army should quickly retreat from all their positions in the Tanjore Empire.
He told Hiranya to put and end to the rebellion within and outside the Empire and sought the help of Emperor Veera Someshwara in this mission.
He ordered the handing over of all kingdoms under the control of Tanjore Empire back to the respective kings and pledged that the Tanjore Empire will not exercise any authority over them.
He called all the artisans in and around the Empire to build a grand Shiva temple in the middle of the Tanjore Empire and restore its Architectural and cultural glory. He himself took upon the task of designing the construction of the temple.
He restored the tradition of holding cultural celebrations once a year and rewarding the eminent poets and artists as was done under the rule of the Great Emperor Elangovathiarayan.'
"Till all these tasks are achieved, Queen Kundavai will rule the Empire." declared Hiranmaya.
Kundavai was in tears.
Every one around agreed in unison and hailed Hiranmaya and Kundavai.
The Sinhala army made a hasty retreat. The kings around the Empire were happy at getting back control of their kingdoms and blessed Hiranmaya.
There were few kingdoms and factions within the Empire which had kept the fire of rebellion going by making attacks on civilians and bleeding the Empire.
Hiranmaya and Hiranya organized their forces and defeated them after an intense battle.
Meanwhile the construction of the grand Shiva temple was initiated. It took eighteen months to complete the temple in all its glory.
The cultural celebrations were planned coinciding with the opening of the temple to the devotees around the world.
Hiranmaya called the sages from the Himalayas and arranged a Yagna to appease the sins committed during the course of this long war and prayed for the dead souls to rest in peace.
In a few months, peace returned to the kingdom of Tanjore.  The warring groups reconciled and buried their past differences.  Women and children began to feel safe and the citizens felt happy and secured.  The vultures which walked around flew away and peacocks danced around in step with other birds as flowers bloomed everywhere.
There was joy in the Empire all round as cultural glory of the Tanjore Empire as envisioned by Elangovathiarayan was restored.
As the coronation of Emperor was set to begin with the finishing touches given to the temple Kundavai called Hiranmaya and revealed to him about the Mystical Diamond in presence of King Veera Someshwara.
Hiranmaya, on hearing about the Mystical Diamond said, "With the blessings of the Lord I have complete faith in ruling the Tanjore Empire and uphold the welfare of my people. I wish to hand over back the Mystical Diamond back to the sages who have come from Himalayas."
King Veera Someshwara intervened, "No dear! The Maharishi had given the diamond to Elangovathiarayan for a divine purpose. You have the responsibility to fulfill the objective of the Mystical Diamond."
Hiranmaya replied, "As you wish I will keep the Mystical Diamond as a tribute to my father."
He took upon himself to climb the temple and design a chamber over the Tower of the temple.  The people of the Tanjore Empire were amazed to watch their Prince as he completed the design in a few days.  News spread around that the missing Mystical Diamond which was an important part of the Royal family tradition had been found out. The people were feeling ecstatic and prayed and danced with devotion.  Hiranmaya summoned thousands of horse carts to push a single boulder weighing over 80 tonnes over the chamber containing the diamond on the top of the Vimana Tower at a height of 65 m above the majestic temple. It took around another hundred days under the gaze of the military under newly crowned Emperor Hiranmaya for the said act. Kundavai watched with tears as men kept engaged tirelessly over restoring the pride of the Empire .   The single boulder fitted nicely over the mystical diamond and stood radiantly as a crown over the majestic Vimana Tower.  When the first rays of the sun kissed the temple, the temple went golden in color and no reflection of the sun fell on either side.
King Veera Someshwara heaved a sigh of relief and was pleased that the balance of the powers of Nature has been restored as the secrets lay hidden inside the safe confines of the abode of GOD, who is all pervading.
Emperor Hiranmaya took his blessings as he set to go back for his kingdom of Mysore. The diamond lay safely above the grand temple and its secrets will lay buried for ever

YEAR 2034

Vihaan had his eyes closed as he was seated on the back of the private cab which was moving towards the Airport.
Mayuri who was seated next to him was feeling tense and irritated.
"Come on Vihaan! Please stop day dreaming. You abandoned the project midway and told me to give you company till Airport only to doze around."
"Mayuri dear! I was just thinking how it would have been if I was the King and you were the Queen and made love at the Tanjore Palace."
Vihaan smiled at Mayuri and hugged her.
Mayuri pushed him aside and asked him again.
“Please tell me where are you going and why are you proceeding ahead without permissions. I think you have forgotten the last time you got suspended from duties."
Vihaan smiled, "Don't worry. Have my hunches ever gone wrong? The Government and the Department has always benefited from my way of unraveling histories and mysteries. Taking backdated permissions is my way of working."
"You will never listen! At least tell me where you are leaving for Vihaan?"
"Towards Mount Kailas to know more about this Diamond my dear."
"Have you gone mad Vihaan!" Mayuri shouted
Vihaan calmed her down. "I will return soon. I'm not a Yogi. I have a Mayuri waiting for me"
"It's not a time to be joking Vihaan. I don't like you going to Mount Kailas in the midst of high tensions between India and China. If you still insist in going I too will come."
Vihaan laughed again
"What will you do there? You will be more of a love distraction for me. If we both lose our jobs; what will we do in future?"
“Come on Vihaan if you continue joking I will cry “
"Ok then Mayuri come with me then. You will be of great help. In case of any Chinese attack you will shoot them down and protect me."
Mayuri punched hard at Vihaan in his stomach.
Vihaan held her hands
"I know you will be coming with me. I have tickets for both of us."
Mayuri hugged Vihaan.
The Mystical Diamond was making its way back to Mount Kailas.

GAME CHANGER

So often, we come across words that are fascinating and used in a clichéd sense.  There always is a climax in a film (not the climax spray, mind you J)  Then there is a turning point in every cricket match.  Whenever, we are in a hopeless situation, we often use a cliché, “Things can never go down from here”, when actually there is so much space down below.  Look at the Indian cricket team, it fell again and again and again that commentators ran short of words in any of the dictionaries.  Even Navjot Singh Sidhu made a disappearing act and was never to be seen again.
Now, among the series of words that I come across, the latest fashionable word seems to be the term “Game changer”.  Anna’s fast at Jantar Mantar was once a Game changer.  Then Ramdev decided that his fast at Ramlila will be a Game Changer.  The arrest of Ramdev became another Game changer.  Anna Hazare again decided to reduce weight on August 16, and that became a Game changer.  Rahul Gandhi came out of nowhere and gave out a grand speech, and popularized the term “Game Changer.”  Kiran Bedi did not like it and decided to have a ghunghat act as a “Game Changer”.  Later the BJP entered the scene and claimed Sushma Swaraj’s speech at the Parliament was the Game Changer.
Wish I were at Ramlila wearing a “Mee Anna Hazare Cap”, carrying a candle on one hand and a tricolor on the other hand.  That could have been a “Game Changing Moment” for me.
I thought the real Game Changer was Mr. Om Puri, who declared those who scored less than 60% as Ganwaars.  I scored only 54.33% in Bcom and hence can say myself as a qualified “Ganwaar”
After the victory celebrations on Sunday, (though I was wondering what this fuss is all about), the rains poured like cats and dogs and the Government servants remained indoors in Mumbai (including me).  This team, I hope the Civil Servants don’t blame the babus.  The Rains were the Game changer.  Come Lok Pal or no Lok Pal, our agriculture and water supply will always depend on rains, and our telecommunications and transport services, atleast in Mumbai will always depend on “no rains”.
15 years down the line, when our next generation children will be studying textbooks regarding “What was the Real Game Changer in India’s Second War of Independence”, I want you all to give the options.
What according to you, was the real Game Changer?

I AM NOT ANNA HAZARE

“On Thursday, August 18, 2011, I cam across a headline in Mumbai Mirror

“If you have never bribed a traffic cop
If you haven’t paid donation for your child’s admission
If you never bought a movie ticket in black
If you paid the entire sum for your apartment by cheque
If you have not carried out illegal changes in your house or office
If you have never bribed a government officer
If you have never paid a bribe in your life”

Mail us your story.  Five readers, selected by us, will get to meet Anna Hazare.”

My reply to the above is, “I have never done any of those, infact being a government officer, I have not taken a single paisa bribe, yet I don’t want to meet Anna Hazare.

The same paper had an interesting article by Devdutt Pattanaik, which says “Rules don’t make a Ram.”

The efficacy of any system depends on the individuals who run the
system and not otherwise.  Individuals cannot be run by any system per
se.   Today, we feel very angry as the collective conscience of the
nation has gone for a toss.  Corruption runs deep and is
all-pervasive.  It will require a sustained movement and strong will
power on the part of like minded individuals to combat corruption.  It
is we, who make the nation and not the other way round.  There cannot
be sides taken in this fight against corruption.  This movement should
involve those who work in Government sector and others who work from
outside.  The virus of corruption affects all of us in some way or
other. Being in the service, I know many colleagues and officers, who
will go by the rule book and execute work without fear or favor.
Working honestly in an environment where the society itself has lost
its moral character involves a lot of sacrifice and willpower.  Honest
people in Government service are the ones who face misconduct
proceedings as they are the ones who work and make things move.  When
things go wrong, these few are the ones who get framed.  No one comes
to support them in their need of hour.

People want to jump the queue,
and that is precisely the problem.  Atleast, 3 out of 10 people want
to get ahead and get things done in their favor on priority basis by
showering undue gratification of any kind.  No one questions those who
accept illegal gratification for fear of getting out of the race.
Those who can't pay at all suffer in silence.  Corruption always flows
from top to bottom.  The lineman, the peon, and the likes who are the
foot soldiers of this corruption racket bear the brunt of blame, while
the officers of Joint Secretary and above and Ministers keep their
heads out of muddy waters.  Even for standing in a queue for darshan
of the Lord, many prefer to pay to have a quick darshan.   Look at the
railway counter, where dumbheads stand in serpentine queues patiently
for tickets while the so called smart ones always jostle and try to
get ahead.  Many hesitate to buy tickets for using our public
transport but will unfailingly question the system.  Last week, I
happened to be in a crowded bus.  The poor conductor could not reach
out to all passengers for issuing tickets.  As soon as the final
destination came, the rest half of the crowd rushed out in glee for
having escaped from buying a bus ticket of just Rs.4/-.  Amidst such
chaos, a college boy stretched his hand out to the conductor and asked
for a ticket.  The rest of the passengers laughed at him for his
honesty and yelled out, "Harishchandra ka aulad hai kya?"  The poor
boy stood embarrassed for his act of honesty.  Western Railway
installed transparent dustbins for security purposes, as there was
always the fear of terrorists taking undue advantage of these
dustbins.  However, to the dismay of the Railway authorities, the
transparent dustbins turned red in color in just a few days as a
result of pan and tobacco stains.   Two days ago, I was chatting with
my blogger friend from New Delhi.  He was telling me, how people
evaded taking tickets at even Metro Stations by inserting a single
coin and rushing through the gate, two at a time.  The techno savvy
generation of the middle class believes that Government servants live
a luxurious life and there is over-employment in the Government
sector.  They are right in majority of the cases, but they cannot continue to see things in black and white. I
would advise them to visit the dilapidated Government quarters in
which many Government employees receive in abysmal conditions. Not everything can
be seen in black and white. While there is widespread unemployment,
the vacancies in many sectors continue to be not filled for technical
reasons.  The private sector also has its share of blame.  While A.
Raja is blamed for the 2G scam, the private parties who bribed the
concerned parties also acted in conspiracy for undue benefits.
Corruption is in the minds and is not specific to any sector.  Those
who are in private sector very well know how some officers working in
purchase department or marketing department do take undue advantage of
their position.  A walk into some of the nearest Airtel, Vodafone or any pvt.
Telecom Relationship Centre or any private distribution centre leaves
an equally  bitter taste in the minds of the common man who feels cheated.

Many argue that they pay bribe because they have to pay and cannot be held guilty.  If they do not have the guts to stop paying bribe, they should not speak of stopping corruption or any revolution.  The crowds at the Azad Maidan in Mumbai staged a “Jail Bharo” agitation.  Youth came in and out of Police Vans, shouting “I went to jail two times, I went to jail five times”.  Someone even bragging, “I went to jail more than ten times.”  Why the unity displayed by them at the venue is lacking where schools charge exorbitant donations, when babus expect illegal gratification, where public services give unsatisfactory services.  A traffic police constable is seen taking bribe in broad daylight, but onlookers do not have the guts to stop him.  They fear of getting beaten or abused.  Even the one who pays bribe does not mind, as he gets away easily by breaking the law.  The collective mindset of all of us including me has become like, “Someone will do it for us.”  We will throw litter at open places, spit, urinate, break laws at our convenience but do not like it when it affects us.  While we speak of corruption, there is a vast majority of people out here in India including children who do not get to eat even a single meal a day.  There are many, who do not have access to primary education and healthcare.  Farmers are still committing suicides in various parts of the country and female infanticide is on the rise.  I am not mixing up the issues.  I am forced to say all this, because the India Against Corruption Movement which lights candles and mashaals proclaim it as “The Second War of Independence” without knowing the significance of what actual independence means.  It is a loosely coined word used as a marketing lexicon, with the media lapping it up.

Crowd mentality can be strange and cannot act really as a barometer of any real revolution.  Even a simple road accident, where the persons are seriously injured and battling for life attracts a large crowd, who act as spectators and enthusiastic as they have a story to tell someone some day about it.  It has become so farcical.  Does majority of the crowd know anything about Jan Lok Pal and really believe that the acceptance of the Jan Lok Pal will give us the second independence that India desperately needs. You are either for Hazare or against him, and if you are not for him , then you must be corrupt.  This is not debate.  This is just mindless.  The only consolation amidst such drama is that the much maligned Gandhiji has become an icon for the burger eating and pizza munching generation.  Mahatma Gandhi’s great grandson Tushar has said “there is a difference in the way the two leaders have used fasting as an instrument of protest.  He feels, while for the Mahatma, fasting was a means to “reform an adversary”, in the case of Hazare, a self-professed Gandhian, it was like targeting an “enemy”.  .
If I say, “I am Anna Hazare” – I am an Indian.  If I say, “I am not Anna Hazare”- I am a traitor.  This subverts the very element of democracy.
Gautam Patel, a practicing lawyer and writer in Mumbai Mirror states that, “the Jan LokPal bill is a bubble-and-squeak legislation, full of yesterday’s leftovers.  It speaks of nominees being “persons with impeccable integrity and a record of public service particularly in the field of fighting corruption.”  Fighting corruption is not a “field” of endeavour, an occupation or a profession.  Who would these persons be, and where might we find them?  Would they include hirsute yogis with penchant for cross-dressing.”
“The Jan Lok Pal arrogates to the LokPal enormous powers, investigative, prosecutorial and punitive, against everyone in public life, from the PM and the higher judiciary to the neighborhood beat cop.  The CBI reports to the LokPal.  The LokPal investigates, prosecutes and imposes penalties directly – including life imprisonment.  To give an idea of the kind of power it demands, Section 8 says the LokPal has the authority to sanction phone taps and communication interceptions against everyone.  If the present government has lost its moral, ethical and constitutional compass, the draftsmen of the Jan LokPal Bill seem to have forgotten the grammar of liberty.

In short, if democracies are run on whipping mindless public emotions and resorting to blackmails –“Frame the laws that I want kind of thing”, then someday we will reach the era of  “stoning criminals to death in open grounds” Taliban style.  The media has failed its duty to report the Anna Agitation in an impartial manner.  The manner in which one was hounded for differing with the Anna Agitation during a media debate on Times Now was disgusting, to say the least.

There are many measures to fight corruption that includes sweeping Police reforms, blacklisting corrupt businessmen, Transparency in Government Tenders/ Orders, including Auction/Sale of Public owned assets, election reforms, transparent and reasonable tax structure, reducing the role of the state and genuine autonomy of the public/ government structure.

Social justice, instilling awareness, equipping all people with access to education, housing and healthcare, effective public distribution are many of the other factors to be fought for along with the fight for corruption and this needs a sustained movement and cannot be solved like making 2-minute Maggi noodles.  Many use the word, “Revolution” without knowing the gravity of what it actually means.  Revolution calls for sacrifice and we must be ready for it.  Our fight against corruption and for all round development must span generations to come.  It does not make sense for many with empty stomach to see people fasting and grabbing media bytes.

If you go through the excerpts of an interview given by Nandan Nilekani to NDTV, he says that “I think there is no doubt that all of us want to do things to eliminate corruption in our society and I fully sympathise with that motive and the frustration that people feel about corruption. But I think if you really want to do it, it has to be done in a much more holistic and strategic manner. Because there is a part of corruption that is big ticket corruption, there is a part of it that is retail corruption.

“I find this simplistic notion that you pass some magical Bill and some corruption is going to go away, I find that... frankly... certainly not the way you should be thinking about the issue.

I am not saying that we don't need a Lokpal Bill. That is for the Parliament to decide - what should be the frame of that bill. I'm just saying that for millions of people corruption is at the point of interaction. When they are trying to get their PDS, when their are trying to get their pension, when they are trying to get their bank account open, when they move from a village to a city and nobody is willing to recognise them. That is where corruption is.”

“You know, you have the IT industry, the BPO industry, the FMGC industry, the manufacturing industry, the auto industry, the financial industry which are very competitive open market kind of situations. The challenge happens when there is some huge role of government, whether the government is a regulator or the government is a provider of some resource which is scarce or the government is a buyer or whatever. And that interface is where all these issues are, so we need to make that much more transparent, open and deregulated. I mean we need liberalisation very much because finally we are going to have millions of Indians coming into the workforce. And the jobs for those young Indians are going to be created by entrepreneurs. So we need to create a culture where we encourage ethical entrepreneurship.

“you streamline things, you automate things and you create choice. I think choice is very important. See the difference between you and me and somebody in a village is that if you don't like the service in one shop you can go to another shop. So you have a choice, if you get bad service you can go somewhere else. If you don't like this bank you can go to some other bank. You don't like this ATM you go that ATM. So the choice is what empowers you. If you are a person who is a part of the PDS, your name is assigned to only one shop. You can't go anywhere else. So if that particular shop is shut down or is not able to give you service or whatever, you are out of luck. So you have become hostage to that one entity. The moment you make it portable where I can go to either shop A or shop B to get my things suddenly you've empowered me. That you do through a system, you can't do it another way.

Anyone can go through the detailed discussion on the website of NDTV.

Today, as we are witness to a nationwide protest against corruption, I should feel proud to say that I respect the institutions of our democracy, but not the corruption by individuals behind it and will fight against them relentlessly.  At the same time, I am also free to say that in our common battle against corruption many like me need not be Anna Hazare.  We do not wave flags, we do not carry candles, we do not go to jails for fun, we do not challenge our democratic setup yet do our duties in our own small way.  We are also Indian.
